The Al Sihatu Wal Aafiyah - 'Our Community, Our Responsibility' conference is being hosted by the IMO charity and will aim to address critical health challenges within the borough.

The event will unite committee members, imams, councillors from over 50 mosques to explore how faith and education are ‘transforming lives  and strengthening families’.

Speakers include IMO Charity’s chief executive, Mohammed Sidat, Blackburn with Darwen director of public health, Abdur Razaq, SPARK collaborative representative, Hanif Ali and Hafiz Suhayl from the Beacon Counselling Trust.

Kidney donor recipients and advocates Mufti Helal Mehmood and Fez Awan will also speak about their experiences.

Speakers will present local data, address stigma, and promote solutions for issues relating to gambling, drugs and alcohol misuse, diabetes and cancer.

IMO's health and well-being manager, Salma Kathrada said: "Al Sihatu wal Aafiyah is an event which brings to the fore issues existing locally, with which many people are suffering in isolation.

"We want to work together to break the shame, stigma and cultural misconceptions which contribute to the decline in the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve.

“Gatherings like these are much needed and we hope attendees on the day show their commitment and sign up with a pledge of collaborative action on the health concerns identified within their communities”.

IMO trustee and health and well-being champion, Michael Wedgworth said “This pioneering initiative represents a crucial step forward in addressing the health challenges faced by our community.

“By bringing together religious leaders, healthcare professionals, and community advocates, we are creating a powerful platform for open dialogue and meaningful action.

“Our faith teaches us that preserving health is a sacred duty, and through this event, we are empowering our community leaders to become champions of health and well-being.

"Together, we can build a healthier, stronger, and more resilient community”.

The Al Sihatu Wal Aafiyah - 'Our Community, Our Responsibility' event is invitation only and will take place on Wednesday, February 26.
